Ravenshaw V-C chamber bombed; 2 students rusticated

Two students of the Ravenshaw University were rusticated on Monday for two years and debarred from appearing at four consecutive semester examinations for allegedly bombing the official chamber of the Vice-Chancellor in the campus late on Sunday night.

While no one was injured in the incident, the V-C’s chamber suffered extensive damages as, reports said, three youths, including a former student, hurled at least five bombs near the university administrative block, which houses the V-C’s chamber. “As per the recommendation of the University Staff Council, we suspended the studentships of the accused and handed over the case to the police,” said V-C Prof BC Tripathy.

Meanwhile, the Police Commissionerate began investigation into the incident after receiving an FIR from the university. The police said the FIR has been filed against one Sanjib Kumar Prusty, a former student, and two present students, Aditya Alfa of Plus III third year Commerce and Sudhansu Kumar of Plus III first year Science.

“The Malgodown Police are now investigating into the incident and appropriate action would be taken against the culprits,” said Twin City Police Commissioner RP Sharma. With the help of a scientific team, the police are trying to ascertain whether bombs or crackers were used to cause damage to the university property.

Speaking to the media, Prof Tripathy said there were previous allegations against the three students. “While one of them was refused admission this year, the frustrated youth with the help of the two others indulged in the vandalism in the campus,” he added.
