Ravenshaw unrest continues; authorities cut sorry figure

Published on:

Hundreds of students, some parents, teachers and other staff of the Ravenshaw University were held captive for over six hours in the campus on Monday as a section of students sat on dharna blocking the main gate of the university.

The students also locked other gates of the university spreading chaos and lawlessness in the campus throughout the day. Shockingly, the hapless authorities and police cut sorry figures as the irate students refused to pay heed to them.

Even the higher secondary students who had their practical examinations on the day had a tough time to get into the campus. Some junior students were even seen scaling the boundary wall to get inside for their examination.

The agitating students had taken law onto their hands demanding action against some unknown accused persons who had allegedly stormed into one of their hostels on Saturday evening and thrashed some inmates, including some student leaders.

While student unrest in the campus is a regular feature, the fresh trouble erupted over the immersion procession of Goddess Saraswati last week. Inmates of two particular hostels in the campus are always at loggerheads and the authorities have miserably failed to contain them, allege insiders.
