Hundreds of students of the Ravenshaw University here on Tuesday staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Vice-Chancellor demanding fulfilment of their “genuine” demands. They threatened to continue their agitation indefinitely until the demands are met. The immediate cause of the students’ agitation was a recent notice issued by the university authorities asking both boy and girl students to vacate their hostels by May 28. The authorities maintain that since some hostels need repair and maintenance works, they plan to complete it during the summer vacation. On the other hand, the students argue that since most of their entrance examinations for higher education are scheduled in the month of June, they cannot afford to vacate the hostels in May. “Instead, allow us to occupy the hostels until our entrance examinations are over,” said a student, adding that most of the students are from far-flung areas. Besides, the students are also on agitation over the recent decisions of the authorities in hiking the tuition fees of self-financing courses and increase in hostel fees under various heads. The authorities, however, maintain that the fee hike was necessitated in view of the increase of prices of some items.
