On its foundation day celebration on Friday, the Ravenshaw University’s FM radio channel will go on air again. However, in view of the recent cyclone and floods ravaging the State, the university has decided to observe its 7th Foundation Day on a low-key.
limping back to normalcy after last month’s sine die and a series of students’ unrest in recent days, the university is going ahead with this important function unenthusiastically. The flower and light decorations will be missing in the campus. Even the minimum whitewashing of its majestic building was put off. “The university will, however, organise an Odia poetry recitation, art competition and Odishi and Chhau dance programmes in the evening,” said university media officer Netaji Abhinandan.
He informed that the Ravenshaw Radio, which had gone off air last year for it was running illegally, would resume its services from Friday. “We have obtained the necessary broadcasting licence from the Union Information and Broadcasting Ministry to run the FM channel,” he said. The FM channel, which first went on air in April 2011, was taken off after eight months when it was learnt that the channel was running without a valid licence. For this, the university had to cough up a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
The channel would now be available to FM radio users within eight to 10 km radius from the campus. Initially, the programme would be broadcast for three hours from 9 am to 12 am. Community-based programmes for social development, music, song, interactive sessions and phone-in and interviews would be broadcast, sources said.
