The Ravenshaw Bikash Abhiyan (RBA) would hold a protest meeting at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose statue near the College Square here on Saturday against the Ravenshaw University authorities’ decision to stop direct elections in the campus by converting Students’ Union to a Students’ Council.

The RBA met here under chairmanship of president Chittaranjan Mohanty took a decision to this effect. Educationists, lawyers, former student leaders and general people would participate in the demonstration, said Mohanty.

He said even as the Ministry of Human Resources Development has already issued notices to implement the September 22, 2006 Supreme Court judgment of forming Students’ Union in every college through a direct election, he Ravenshaw authorities have violated the democratic rights of students in violation of the judgment.

“The State Government should immediately intervene and ensure that Students’ Union election held in the Ravenshaw University otherwise we would intensify our stir in coming days,” said Mohanty.

Among others, Kshirod Mohapatra, Akshay Das, Prashant Das, laxmipriya Mohanty, Geeta Das, Siddhartha Rath, Bobby Balabantray, Pavel Priyadarshan and Enamul Haque were present.
