Ravenshaw, MSL cancel students union elections

Published on:

Following widespread students’ unrest in two important educational institutions of Cuttack - MS Law College and Ravenshaw University -  their authorities on Monday decided to cancel the students’ union elections this year. Students’ elections were also not held in these institutions last year for similar unrest in their campuses.

“In pursuance of the proceedings of joint meeting of Deans, HoDs, Coordinators and members of Students Election Monitoring Committee and Proctorial Board and the recommendations thereof, the Students’ Union election 2018 of Ravenshaw University stands cancelled,” said a notification issued by the university authorities amidst massive protests by some students.

Similarly, a notice published at the MS Law College by Principal Dr Sushant K Nanda said, “As per the decision of the Staff Council, there will be no election to the Students’ Council this year.”

It was also learnt that the authorities of the premier law college decided to suspend the classes till the end of Puja vacation on October 24.

It may be mentioned that due to almost open interference of local political leaders during the elections, particularly by the ruling party MLAs, student unrest persisted in the two old and famous educational institutions spoiling the academic ambience in the autumn semester. Over the past several years, student elections here are either cancelled or held amidst massive police arrangements.
