The sighting of Egyptian vultures, which is almost extinct, in a small hamlet outside Brahmapur city limits near Golanthara has amazed bird lovers.
Dr Jyoti Prasad Pattnaik, founder of the Brahmapur Birds and a bird enthusiast sighted these big birds near a field at Golanthara. This vulture has been sighted in different parts of the State. Both mature as well as juvenile birds of the rare species have been sighted. “A number of baby vultures have also been sighted in this area, which suggests that the number of these species is on the rise in Ganjam district,” Dr Patnaik said.
He further said since these birds are procreating, it is a good feeling amongst the bird lovers of Odisha that these birds might be largely present and may come out of the extinction category soon.
Notably, Dr Pattnaik, a doctor by profession, has been instrumental about conservation of birds and has created a group called Brahmapur Birds, wherein he showcases birds from in and around Brahmapur. In March this year, he had reported the sighting of an Egyptian Vulture near Bhetanai in Ganjam district. This time he is able to capture clear images of the birds.
