Rapid travel system between twin cities mooted

Published on:

To avoid traffic congestion on NH-5 between Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, the State Government has decided to put in place a mass rapid transit system (MRTS) between the two cities. Beginning the process, the Housing & Urban Development Department signed an award of contract with the Balaji Railroad Systems ltd, a consultant agency, here on Saturday. As per the contact, the agency would prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the system within 10 months.

The DPR would cover the 30-km road, and the agency would take

Rs 2.52 crore for its preparation. The report thrust upon traffic demand assessment, system selection, mobility analysis, alignment study, multimodal land-integration plan, land acquisition details and transit oriented development. It would also study economic analysis of the project which will assist the Government to decide modes for successful implementation of the project.

The project financing structure involves 50 per cent funding by the Centre under the Urban Transport Planning scheme and the rest 50 by the State Government.
