Rape accused marries victim in Choudwar jail

Ever since its establishment in 1991, the Choudwar Circle Jail here for the first time turned into a marriage mandap on Thursday when a rape accused inmate tied the nuptial knot with his victim following court orders.

“Under-trial prisoner Rajesh Singh (23) of Gurudijhatia of Cuttack district married the rape victim exchanging garlands following orders from the district POCSO court and DG (Prisons),” informed Jail Superintendent Kulamani Behera. The girl, who turned a major last month and had become a mother of a baby boy three months ago, came to the jail premises with her parents and well-wishers.

After the marriage, she went to her husband’s house with her parents-in-law. But the bridegroom stayed back in the jail as his bail application is scheduled to be heard again next month.  Hearing the bail application of Rajesh, the POCSO court earlier had set a condition that his application would be considered only if he married the victim.

Since the victim was a minor and she was impregnated by him last year, Rajesh had expressed his wish to marry her.The jail authorities also hosted a wedding reception, which was attended by other inmates.
