Former Congress MlA Ramesh Jena and four others, including his father, were sent to jail custody after their bail petitions were rejected by the SDJM Court here on Tuesday.

The city police produced the former Sanakhemundi MlA, his father Arakshita Jena, Bapi Panda and two BMC Corporators, R Murali Mohan and Sanjay Nayak, before the Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) court on the day. The court rejected their bail pleas and sent them to a 14-day judicial custody. The next hearing has been posted to March 11.

The police too submitted an appeal to the SDJM Court to take MlA Jena on a 14-day remand.

Notably, a special squad of Brahmapur police had brought here Jena and his two aides after picking them from an apartment in Bhubaneswar on Sunday morning. After interrogations, the cops arrested the accused late on Monday night.

The police had, during a search in Jena’s house at Bila Street in Gatabazar here, seized 2 revolvers with five live bullets, Rs10 lakh in cash, five bank accounts with deposits of over Rs1 crore, over 100 land documents and some important papers, according to sources.

Meanwhile, Congress Ganjam district unit president Bhagaban Gantayat submitted a memorandum to IG Amitabh Thakur seeking action against police officers for ‘illegally’ detaining the former MlA for over 36 hours since March 6. Gantayat too threatened that Congress workers would resort to an agitation in front of the IG office on March 11 if no action is taken by then.
