Rajaguru who turned a full moon night into dark

Though it may sound strange, but it’s a fact that the Rajaguru of the palace of Puri King happened to wield tantric prowess. He had turned a full moon night moonless and dead dark.

Impressed by his power, the Gajapati King had bestowed him the stature of Prime Minister in his court and head of his army, besides awarding him with some landed properties.

Today not a single member of the Rajguru family is alive, but his homestead plot in his village still exists as a memoir.

The Madalapanji (Shreemandira almanac), scriptures and ancient history of Odisha have narrated Rajaguru Chandrasekhar Bahinipati Mahapatra of Biranarasinghapur Sasan, a hereditary Brahmin village under the ambit of Jagannath Temple and also about the wonderful incident, which dates back to Balibhanu Dev of the Ganga dynasty.

As per the shrine almanac, in a conventional blessing ceremony of Balibhanu Dev on a full moon day (Purnami) hours before lunar eclipse, Rajaguru Bahinipti wrongly spelt it as dark moon day, which was a slip of tongue. The other pundits present at the ceremony laughed at Bahinipati due to his wrong spell.

Ashamed of the jeers passed by his compatriots, egoistic Bahinipati remained stuck to his wrong spell by advising the king to wait till night to see that there was no moon. Later, Bahinipati returned home

and sat in prayer before his goddess asking her to turn the full-moon night into dark. Pleased with his devotion, the Goddess fulfilled his demand on a condition that he would lose life of his four sons as his work goes against the nature.

By the way, all his four sons agreed to dedicate their lives in order to preserve the respect and dignity of their father. Eventually, when night came, the King found no moon in the sky.

In the mean time, all the four sons of Rajaguru died one after another the same night. Surprised over the tantric prowess, King gifted Bahinipati 990 Bati of land and many more valuables, besides conferring the titles.
