Pre-monsoon rains on Friday exposed the poor drainage system in the city with several parts of it, including the Capital Hospital premises, remaining inundated for hours.
Bhubaneswar received a record 60 mm rainfall in about an hour on the day, which brought normal life across the city to a standstill.
Areas like Nayapalli, Jayadev Vihar, Acharya Vihar, Rasulgarh Square, Chintamaniswar and many low-lying areas witnessed heavy waterlogging up to waist deep. Vehicular traffic at Rasulgarh Square and Acharya Vihar was also hit due to the downpours.
One-foot-high rainwater flowed at the Capital Hospital premises causing great inconvenience for patients, attendants and doctors. Water flowed in gynaecology ward and electric control room of the hospital.
As the drainage system around the hospital is in a poor state, drain water starts overflowing on the road when it rains. The BMC and Drainage Division are yet to take up pre-monsoon preparations in the area.
A similar situation was witnessed on the Cuttack-Puri road near Bomikhal as people tried to wade through knee-deep water.
