The people of the State heaved a sigh of relief from the unrelenting heat wave with low pressure triggered rain on Sunday.

Many parts of the State experienced moderate to heavy rainfall under the influence of the well-marked low pressure over the Bay of Bengal while temperature came down to by 10-15 degrees Celsius in the coastal and interior districts where the heat wave had disrupted normal life.

Baleswar recorded the highest rainfall in the State till 5.30 pm with 96 mm, followed by Bhubaneswar (91.4), Cuttack (71.6), Puri (58), Gopalpur (54), Chandbali (53), Dhenkanal (47), Angul (24.4), Baripada (14.4), Paradip (4), Keonjhargarh (4) and Jharsuguda (0.3).

Indian Meteorological Department, Bhubaneswar Director Sarat Sahu said the low pressure is now centred over south Odisha and Andhra Pradesh coast and will move west-north-west in the next 48 hours.

Under its influence, there would be widespread rains in most parts of the interior districts while heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in the coastal and northern districts like Jajpur, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts in the next 48 hours, he added. He, however, said temperature in the State would further rise after May 28.
