The depression-triggered torrential rains accompanied by strong wind 50 to 65 kph over the past 72 hours have paralysed normal life in the coastal blocks, including Ersama, Balikuda, Kujang and Paradip port town of the district.

While the post-cyclone relief and restoration work in several blocks have been completely halted, educational institutions and markets remained closed and Government offices witnessed thin attendance due to the heavy downpour. The district received 65 mm and Paradip received 85 mm rainfall in the span of 12 hours on Thursday.

Residents in Ersama, Balikuda, Kujanga blocks have been moved to cyclone shelters and pucca houses, while fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea in view of rains predicted for next 24 hours, said District Emergency Officer Dr Swata Kumar Das. Hundreds of acres of land in Goda, Gada Harishpur, Padmapur, Siali and Janakadeipur have been inundated by sea tide.

To take stock of the situation, district Collector SK Mallick on Thursday held a meeting with the officials and instructed them to resume the relief works soon and stock additional food, medicine, water pouches. He also directed that no official and staff would be allowed to leave the headquarters without notice.
