The Freethought Party of India (FPI) strongly opposed the Odisha Government's decision to reserve seats in engineering and medical courses for Government school students as the same is fully violative of the Right to Equality guaranteed to the Indian citizens.
The Government of Odisha should re-think over the matter, it suggested. "Why should the same high quality of education in English medium be not provided to all students irrespective of the financial status or the social origin of their parents? Each action of the Government should be in full conformity with the citizens’ Right to Equality as given to them under Article 14 of the Constitution of India," said a FPI Press release. Besides, the FPI stated that if the Government of Odisha was really committed to equality, then it must do away with all Odia medium schools and make all schools English medium.
FPI general secretary B Ramchandra CST Voltaire urged upon the CM not to proceed on line of “reservation” as it is an insult to democracy.
