Puri witnesses spurt in crime; visitors unsafe

Criminals have been daring the Puri police by committing crimes one after another even near police stations, busy markets and beach areas of the city in broad daylight. In most of the cases, they manage to escape the police.

On Sunday, two bike-borne criminals snatched a bag from one Amar Bilash Behera of Bhanjanagar in Ganjam district and sped away towards Chakratirth road.

The incident took place when Behera was on his way to the local railway station. And the crime occurred barely 50 metres from the Sadar police station along the most important VIP road of the city.

Though Behera within minutes of the loot approached the police station, surprisingly no police officer was present there. A constable attended him and alerted the PCR. No arrest was made till Monday.

In another incident, on Thursday last four youths forced their entry into a pilgrims’ bus which arrived from Gujarat. Brandishing sharp weapons, they looted two bags from pilgrims and fled. The conductor of the bus filed a complaint with the Sea Beach police.

The police registered a criminal case and arrested Dharama Barik (22) of Dhoba Sahi and Susanta Pradhan (24) of Gora Kabar lane of the city while two others were absconding.

The arrested duo was forwarded to the Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) Court, which refused their bail pleas and remanded them to the jail custody.
