The repair work and safety provision in the immediate vicinity of the lord Jagannath Temple at Puri has been put in the hands of the temple administration by an order of the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC).
The latest order of the commission followed a petition filed by rights activist and lawyer RadhakantaTripathy before the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) over the failure of the Government in maintaining safety measures in lord Jagannath Temple.
Radhakanta alleged that due to failure of the State Government in maintaining safety measures one Sumitra and Sonali of Sailashree Vihar, Bhubaneswar injured on October 8 last year at Natamandir when a lime stone fall.
The petitioner too cited few examples on the condition of the world famous temple and mishaps in which many devotees sustained injuries.
“Failure of the State Government and negligence of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is responsible for the deterioration of the temple and endangers the human lives,” Radhakanta alleged.
He requested the NHRC to investigate the case and direct the State and the ASI to act on war footing to ensure adequate safety measures and continuous monitoring thereof in this world famous temple and provide appropriate medical treatment free of cost to the victims along with compensation.
The NHRC transferred the petition to the OHRC to consider the case. The OHRC sent the petition to the Temple Chief Administrator and the ASI authorities for necessary action.
