The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Railway Ministry to provide basic amenities to gatemen posted at different level crossings in the country.
Rights activist Akhand said the NHRC has issued the direction while considering his petition filed with it recently. He said the rights body directed the Railways Board Chairman to take necessary steps within eight weeks. Akhand said nearly 40,000 gatemen are now working at about 18,000 manned railway crossings throughout the country buy the Ministry is yet to provide them basic amenities like drinking water and toilet facilities.
