In a daring broad daylight robbery, four unidentified miscreants posing themselves as prospective tenants on Monday robbed an elderly couple in the Gandamunda area under the Khandagiri police station here.
Soon after looting gold ornaments worth lakhs and some cash, the robbers fled the spot.
Meanwhile, the Commissionerate police rushed to the spot while the Special Squad of the Twin City police launched a massive manhunt to nab the goons.
Victim Shradhanjali Prusty, who resides at Plot No 400/29/31 under the Khandagiri police limits, said one of the four miscreants had come on Sunday noon seeking a room on rent for his sister. He again came at 8 pm and took a photograph of the room so that he could send it to his sister for her confirmation.
“I gave him the key of the room through the window. After a while, he called to return the key. No sooner had I opened the main door, the four persons barged in brandishing a sword and chopper and overpowered me and bound me with tapes and plastics and snatched my gold necklace, gold bangles, earrings,” said Shradhanjali.
The miscreants also looted the gold chain and rings of Shardhanjali’s husband Subhas Chandra Prusty.
The couple is staying alone at home as their only son is staying outside the State.
