'Proper training to nurses can reduce newborns' death'

Some medical experts on Friday exuded hopes here that the State’s newborns’ death rate would radically go down if the nurses in State hospitals and health centres are provided training to properly manage the first minute after births, which is crucial for the newborns’ life.

“Odisha has the dubious distinction of ranking 3rd highest in newborn death in the country. Proper management of the first golden minute of life after delivery will reduce this death rate very much. Training to the nurses through workshops will be of great benefit to check the death rate,” said the medical experts who attended a workshop on ‘Newborn-the first golden minute’ organised here jointly by the Central Hospital of the East Coast Railway and the Indian Academy of Paediatrics.

ECoR Chief Health Director Dr D Panigrahi inaugurated the workshop in the presence of Medical Director of the ECoR Central Hospital

Dr DK Sendha, paediatrician Dr RK Mahapatra, NHRM consultant Dr A Mohapatra, the Capital Hospital’s Dr l Pradhan and Associate Professor of KIMS Hospital Dr Manas Kumar Behera.

About 30 nursing personnel from all various hospitals under the East Coast Railway jurisdiction participated in the workshop. They were given hands-on training and demonstration through models.
