Probe into Ravenshaw irregularities held

An officer in the rank of Additional Secretary in the Department of Higher Education of the State on Tuesday conducted a daylong inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the Ravenshaw University here. “I will submit a consolidated report to the Higher Education Secretary soon as per the Government direction,” said Additional Secretary PK Das.

Allegations such as misappropriation of funds, faulty recruitment of teachers as well as guest faculties and unfair mode of promotions under the Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) were levelled against the university authorities. Taking cognisance of the allegations, the Higher Education Secretary last month had ordered the administrative probe.

Sources said the Additional Secretary vetted the university’s audit reports of last two years with reference to the allegations of misappropriation of funds and faulty purchases during the past two years. The officer also very carefully examined the mode of recruitment of permanent, contract and guest faculties.

It may be mentioned that ever since the prestigious Ravenshaw College was converted into a university in 2006, it has been facing controversies like unsolicited political interferences, mismanagement and lack of adequate faculties, indiscipline, ragging, sexual slur and allegations of corruption leading to repeated students’ agitations.
