A departmental inquiry into the recent discovery of objectionable articles in the Brahmapur Circle Jail began on Friday.

Prison IG Arun Roy is inquiring as to how the objectionable items like weapons, mobile, gutkha and cigarettes came into the cells of prisoners, including that of former MlA Ramesh Jena.

He visited 24 wards and interrogated the wardens and other jail employees in this regard. He also made queries on the security of the jail and later held talks with senior officials.

Roy said, “We have started investigating into the finding of banned materials in the jail premises. Appropriate action would be taken once the investigation gets over.” South Jail DIG Gopabandhu Mallick and Jailer RN Rout were present, among others, accompanying the Prison IG in the investigation.

Notably, a joint team of the police and the district administration had conducted a surprise raid on the jail on May 9 and seized cash, weapons, cigarettes, SIM cards, ganja and other objectionable articles from various prison cells. Jail Warder Chinmay Pradhan was suspended in this regard.
