Probe into B'pur civic body scam sought

City-based senior advocate Manoj Pattnaik alleged fraudulent practices of the Brahmapur Municipal Corporation (BMC) involving embezzlement of lakhs of rupees and sought a probe by the Vigilance into them.

According to information available, Pattnaik alleged that the BMC reportedly had shown in records execution of several development works under ward no-17 which include Sana Mochi Street, Bhimarao Petta-Radhakrushna Sahi, Bangali Sahi-Radhakrushna Sahi drains, Veterinary Hospital Operation Room, Police Colony drain, etc. But they were never undertaken in practice.

Pattnaik said that an amount of `38,32,413 was estimated for execution of development works in the ward. Since no work was undertaken, the money was embezzled, he alleged.

Meanwhile, Pattnaik submitted a letter along with relevant documents pertaining to the irregularities to the DSP, Vigilance here on Friday demanding a thorough investigation in to the matter, sources said.

Corporator Mamata Bisoyi reportedly expressed ignorance over the matter. She said during her tenure, projects worth `40 lakh were smoothly being undertaken in the ward.

According to reliable sources, a former Corporator of the BMC in May last had also made a similar demand for vigilance probe to unearth a nexus between the BMC and a group of contractors in regard to engagement of sanitation and cleaning staff and payment for lifting of garbage.

The waste materials collected from different wards are supposed to be disposed of at Chandania Dumping Yard, instead the waste materials are being disposed of at some nearby places within the township areas such as Andhapasara Road, Corporation Road, NH-5 Side and Khajuria Road for which inflated transport costs are being reportedly billed and collected by producing false vouchers, sources said.

More shockingly, the weighing of waste materials before their disposal, to determine the transport, is not being adhered to, for vested interest, causing huge loss to the exchequer, said some sources.
