PPT ready for talks with aggrieved workers

Published on:

The Paradip Port Trust (PPT) on Thursday stated that it has awarded several work contracts to carry out different works of the port.  Various contractors are executing the works by engaging contract workers, and the port administration does not involve directly in any aspects on engagement of contract workers.

The port’s recognised unions have put forth some issues related to contract workers. A committee headed by the PPT Deputy Chairman was constituted to examine the issues and submit its report within three weeks. The committee held discussions on September 3 and asked the representatives of unions to submit their grievances in line with the extant rules and regulations prescribed by the Government of India for the contract workers. On receipt of the committee’s report, the port management will examine and address the issues as per the provisions in the rules.

When proactive action has already been initiated by the port management to address the issues of the contract workers, it is unfortunate that some members of the Paradip Port DlRs’ and Contract Workmen’s Association have resorted to strike since Wednesday which is uncalled for in view of the aforesaid reasons.

It is reiterated that port administration is always ready to have open and fair discussions pertaining to the welfare and genuine grievances of the employees and workers to maintain industrial harmony and peace. Anyone interested to discuss the issues with the management is free to come and discuss, a release said.
