All 742 Daily labour Roll (DlR) workers engaged at the Paradip Port launched an indefinite strike under the banner of Paradip DlR Workers’ Association led by Bapi Sarkel here on Wednesday demanding increasing of their monthly salary to Rs 18,000.
The workers, who have been working for the last 15 to 20 years, are now getting Rs 6,000 to Rs 7,000 per month. A week ago, they had place a demand before the PPT authorities to increase the salary.
Though the authorities had formed a sub-committee to look into the demand, yet no office bearer of the association was included in the subcommittee.
As the Jagatsinghpur district administration clamped Section 144 CrPC at various places for last several weeks, the association was given permission for only 12 hours to carry out protests in front of the Paradip Officers’ Club.
The protestors said they would continue their stir till each worker gets Rs18,000 per month and is provided medical facilities in the PPT hospital and accommodation.
