In spite of drastic reduction in iron ore exports from the Paradip Port in last two consecutive years, Paradip Port Trust (PPT) crossed 54.7 million tonnes (MT) of cargo handling as of March 21. PPT chairman Sudhanshu Shekhara Mishra told that till February 28 for the financial year 2012-13, the PPT had handled 51.41 MT compared to 49.84 MT in the corresponding period in 2011-12, thus having an increase of 1.57 per cent in cargo volume.
Though the port lost a chunk of cargo of iron ore in last few years, the volume of non coking coal and crude oil has increased than the previous years. Mishra also hinted at the port's contribution in respect of undertaking a host of CSR activities. like massive plantations, upgradation in the PPT hospital by appointing specialist doctors and providing drinking water supply etc.
