Amidst lockdown the residents while are forced to be indoors, frequent unscheduled power cuts by the Nesco had proved to be adding to their woes as mercury was soaring and day temperature had been hovering around 40 degree Celsius.
Frequent power cuts, for unknown reasons, are not only experienced in the urban patches, they are also in the rural areas. The residents are facing untold woes as the supply is erratic and at time the cut period is about an hour.
The poor, especially the infants and elderly people, having no other means of electricity supply, are the worst sufferers.
Due to the Corona attributed lockdown while all the industrial and commercial establishments are closed and load on the grid has reduced, the residents expressed their dismay over the power cuts.
For power supply in the town while the department had two 2 feeders and 6 structures in view of growing demand and load, three more feeders and four structures have been made.
Nesco Superintendent Engineer Braja Sundar Parida has a different version to say about the domestic consumption.
“Despite closure of industrial units and commercial establishments, surprisingly the domestic consumption of electricity has gone up compared to previous years. Data says the total consumption has gone up by 2.5 million unit than last year. It is believed since the people are forced to stay in they must be using all electrical appliances,” said Parida.
“The power cuts were made as substations were erected to cater the additional power requirements of COVID-19 quarantine centres. In the town two sub stations were installed in FM College commerce block,” he said, adding that all the urgently required modifications and alteration have been completed.
