Acute poverty and solitude forced a deaf and dumb hapless mother to give away his four-month-old child to a neighbour in the Vedvyas area here. Unable to feed her child, the woman handed over her son to the neighbour for his upbringing.

The physically disabled woman was staying with her brother-in-law Mantu Das' house in Vedvyas area. After the deaths of her in-laws, Mantu had bought the woman to his house. later, Mantu was killed in a road accident along with his son and daughter.

When Mantu died, both his wife and the woman started struggling to survive. Their situation started worsening, when the physically disabled woman gave birth to a male child about four months back.

Realising her inability and helplessness, the mother decided to give her child to a neighbour. As the infant had fallen sick due to lack of food, the adoptee admitted him at the Ispat General Hospital here. However, his health condition is reportedly stable now. Getting information, the Child Welfare Committee members reached the IGH on Wednesday and talked with Mantu's wife, who was attending the child at the hospital.

They advised her to keep the child with her since the mother of the child is deaf and dumb. They also assured to give the hospital expenses of the child and arrange money for his upbringing.

Notably, the committee wrote to the district Collector seeking financial assistance of Rs 2,000 per month for upbringing of the child for next two years, said committee member JR Sahoo.
