Portion of K'pada school roof collapses; children safe

About 70 students of a Government-run Upper Primary School of Uttar Jamboo village in Mahakalpada block had a close shave on Monday when a portion of the concrete of the school building’s frontal portion caved in while the classes were going on.

The students and teachers heaved a sigh of relief and thanked to God as no harm was done to them due to the incident. According to the sources, the incident occurred in afternoon at the Ramani Mohana Upper Primary School when the tiny tots were in their classrooms.

The students were panicked when a nearly 20-feet-long concrete structure fell off the frontal portion of the roof creating a big alarming sound. After the incident, classes were suspended for the day, informed the sources. It may be noted that the school-cum-cyclone shelter at Uttar Jamboo was constructed with the funding of the Red Cross Society in 2004.

The Kendrapada district Collector has directed the concerned School and Mass Education Department officials to conduct an inquiry into the quality of the construction of the school building. The officials have also been asked to assess whether the existing building is safe for classroom teaching, informed official sources.
