With a slew of demands, hundreds of DlR and contractual workers of the Paradip Port led by their association president Bapi Sarkhel took out a procession from Nuabazar to the port headquarters here on Monday. They submitted a six-point charter of demands to the port chairman through port secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra.
The demands included wage hike of the port DlR and contractual worker comparable with the employees working at the port office and provision of `10 lakh compensation and employment to a family member of any deceased worker. Besides, instead of accepting applications from outsides, Sarkhel demanded necessary steps to transfer the DlR and contractual workers to the vacant posts for third and fourth grade employees at the port. The port secretary held discussions with union leaders and assured that necessary steps would be taken at the next trustee meeting.
