Due to substandard construction work, the Padmapur Kumudinala canal has become a model of widespread irregularities.
Although the Kumudinala was built in 2012-13, the canal has not been used by farmers since then. In some places, the canal has developed cracks, while in others, the walls have cracked and the canal has been filled with bushes and soil. The can head also lies broken and the farmers' fields are covered with sand.
Recently, the canals were flooded due to heavy rains, causing waterlogging and mudslides on vast swathes of lands.
The farmers have alleged that while the Government has been spending millions of rupees for canal repairs and cleaning, the contractors are embezzling the money by doing substandard work.
Some farmers said no action had been taken despite repeated complaints with the departmental officials. The Irrigation officials, on the other hand, arrived at the scene and surveyed the canal.
According to the Padmapur Minor Irrigation Division, the can will be repaired soon. Complaining huge irregularities in the canal work, farmers meanwhile have demanded a Vigilance probe into it.
