A lower court here on Tuesday allowed the Commissionerate Police to take the mafia Dhalsamant brothers on remand for the fourth time, this time for five days, after their arrest on January 29. Besides the brothers, police also took one of their arrested business associates, Debashis Kar, on a five-day remand.
Claiming that the remand was necessary to gather more evidence against the brother duo, police had prayed for a ten-day remand. Earlier, the police had also taken the brothers on remand for 19 days in three phases in connection with their alleged involvement in the murder of their two former associates Dipu Mallick and Omm Prakash Swain.
Earlier in the morning, the brothers along with Kar were produced before the court where the accused persons' advocate Soura Chandra Mohapatra vehemently opposed the fresh remand plea. He objected to registration of two separate FIRs in the incident when the cause, time, accused and place of occurrence of the purported crime were same as claimed by the police.
On the other hand, the suspense over the outcome of State Government's petition to allow police to handcuff the mafia brothers continued on the day as the High Court verdict on it could not come. The HC had reserved its verdict on the issue after completing hearing on it.
