Police Station diaries to be updated every day

With a view to bringing a major reform in the system, the State Government has decided to amend the Odisha police manual rule to facilitate updating the police station diary on a daily basis.

So far, police station diaries are updated on a monthly basis which is raising concern among the public about manipulations in the police stations by the officers concerned.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has issued orders to bring changes in the Odisha police manual for entry of station diary on a daily basis.

The Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) Project is implemented on Mission Mode under the National e-Governance Plan, and the State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB) is implementing the project on a top priority basis.

Recently, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) suggested that the station diary be written on a daily basis. The Union Home Secretary also made a suggestion to the State Governments in this regard.

As the Odisha has almost completed the CCTNS project, it is important to make arrangements for daily entry of station diary through the Core Application Software provided by the NCRB.

SCRB chief B Radhika had also proposed to the State Home Department in this respect.  This would prevent backdated entry of any FIR or missing report in the police stations, said a senior police officer.

And there would be more accountability of the police officers as there would be less scope for manipulations, said he. These diaries are of immense help in prevention and detection of crimes and keeping track of the movements of criminals.

With the CCTNS Project to be “Go live” by December 2015, the Odisha Police would be able to use the facility. The objective of the system is to facilitate collection, storage, analysis, transfer and share data on crime and criminals all over the country.
