The Commissionerate Police made a mild lathicharge on Tuesday to disperse students of the city-based Regional College of Management (RCM) after they staged a demonstration in front of the gate of the Raj Bhavan.
The students have been demanding issuance of original registration cards and degree certificates denied to them by the college authorities despite their two-month-old agitation.
More than one hundred students staged a dharna near the Raj Bhavan after coming in a procession. After a few minutes of the dharna, the students staged a demonstration in front of the gate of the Raj Bhavan. The police suddenly stopped the students and asked them to leave the place. When the students didn’t move out, the police resorted to the mild lathicharge to disperse them.
The students staged another dharna on the road near the Raj Bhavan demanding release of the students whom the police took away from the earlier dharna spot.
On April 9, MBA and MCA students of the RCM led by Raza Quadir had met Governor Dr SC Jamir and sought his intervention in support of their demand for issue of original registration cards to the current batch and degree certificates of the passed-out students. The Governor had reportedly assured the students to take steps to solve their problems.
Notably, due to a dispute over its admission into MBA course, the RCM has not been able to get certificates from the BPUT (Biju Patnaik University of Technology) since 2009 and, hence, has failed to provide them to the pass-out students. The students are continuing their dharna in front of their college since February 11.
