Police launch drive to execute pending NBWs

With the general elections round the corner, the State police have geared up for execution of the pending non-bailable warrants (NBWs) against criminals.

DGP Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma has asked the district police authorities to make specials drives to execute the NBWs throughout the State. More than 38,000 NBWs are pending against the criminals in various police districts.

Sharma’s drive to nab all the criminals before the elections is a timely operation so that these elements would be behind bars and would not be able to create hindrance in fair conduct of the elections, pointed out a senior IPS officer, who is monitoring the special drive for execution of the NBWs.

The State police have come up with an innovative idea of publishing district-wise and police station-wise lists of NBWs in the website www.odishapolice.gov.in

The district SPs have been directed to display the lists of NBWs in notice boards of police stations and GP offices.

“With the NBW list in public domain, we would get lot of information about the whereabouts of those who are wanted and many criminals would surrender in court,” said IG of Law and Order Sanjeeb Panda.

In last 15 days, more than 3,000 NBWs have been disposed of in specials drives.

Koraput district tops the chart in terms of number of pending NBWs with about 4,100, followed by Cuttack with 2,500, Puri 2,300 and Ganjam 2,000.

Koraput also leads in the execution and disposal of NBWs in last fifteen days with disposal of more than 200 NBWs.

With cooperation from public, the police hope to bring down the pendency of NBWs to 10,000 before the elections, said a senior IPS officer.
