Police attack Home Guards late at night

The city police landed in fresh trouble after the agitating Home Guards alleged that they were attacked by the cops in the wee hours of Sunday leaving six injured and detaining three women Home Guards illegally.

Sources said the whereabouts of the three detained women home guards is still not known. According to the sources, at 3.30 am on Sunday, armed with lathis and other weapons, police forces led by Capital police station IIC Asim Panda, Nayapalli police station IIC Aunp Kanungo and Mahila police station IIC Sarojini Nayak in plain clothes suddenly barged into the agitating Home Guards’ tent and attacked them using filthy languages.

“We never expected such heinous action from our superiors. Despite ensuring justice to us, they illegally arrested and attacked us mercilessly,” charged Nikhila Utkal Gruharakhi Mahasangha vice-president Prasanna Mallick, adding the Mahasangha will move to the Human Rights Commission against the police atrocity.

The protesters alleged that the senior cops misbehaved with the women Home Guards too. “They even destroyed our rice, dal and cooking equipment in the tent before destroying the tent itself,” said an agitating home guard.

Notably, nearly 17,500 home guards from across the State have been sitting in a dharna before the Assembly since March 20 demanding better pay package and Government recognition to their Mahasangha.
