Police adopt social media hurriedly

Nudged by the reports that a re-tweet from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) helped rescuing four minor children from human trafficking in Kandhamal district, the State police have hurriedly decided to take use of the social media extensively in solving problems of people and addressing their grievances promptly.

Following a tweet from one Amit Nanda, the CMO had on Tuesday alerted police, who in turn, rescued the minor boys and arrested three persons in this connection. The boys were allegedly being taken from Brahmapur to Sambalpur by a private bus and were rescued midway at Phulbani, reports said.

At a meeting at the police headquarters here on Thursday, DGP KB Singh emphasised upon extensive use of social networking platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram by all wings of the police organisation to remain in touch with different groups of people and Government departments and the CMO.

“Since the CMO is sharing a lot of information and instructions through Twitter and Facebook, police districts, police ranges and all wings of police department should follow the CMO’s Twitter and Facebook accounts and take prompt and necessary action wherever required,” the DGP told top police officials.

According to a release issued by the police headquarters, the Twitter handle of the State police would be operating under the supervision of the State Police Control Room and it would follow the CMO Twitter account. Similarly, the State police Facebook account would be under the supervision and control of the headquarters public relation office.
