Police and unidentified miscreants exchanged fire near Power House Square in Jeypore town of the district in the wee hours of Tuesday.
Sources said the Town police received an input about transportation of ganja and intensified patrolling to nab the anti-socials. Two motorbike-borne miscreants providing escort to a suspicious vehicle spotted the police patrol and opened fire at the cops.
The police team also retaliated in self-defence. However, the anti-socials managed to slip even though the police gave them a hot chase. “We chased them continuously but they started firing near the bypass road, and thereafter increased their speed. They also opened fire at Jaynagar chhak and managed to escape. We have seized 9 mm cartridges from the spot,” Town Police Inspector-in-Charge Baleswar Gidhi said.
