Protesting against the controversial Polavaram irrigation project of Andhra Pradesh, Maoists have called for a bandh in Malkangiri district on July 20 and sought people’s cooperation to make it a success.
The Malkangiri-Koraput-Visakhapatnam Border (MKVB) Divisional Committee of CPI(Maoist) also urged the project-affected people to come forward and fight against the construction of the dam. “The Polavaram Dam project will displace dalits, tribals, poor and marginalised people of the region benefiting the ruling class, capitalists and elite people only. To oppose this project, we have called for a Malkangiri Bandh on July 20,” said MKVB secretary Benu in a Press release. “We appeal to all the affected people to unite and observe the strict bandh on July 20,” he added claiming the project as anti-people.
On July 13, the MKVB division had put several posters at different places of Chitrakonda block in the district opposing the Polavaram project. The Red rebels wanted stopping of the project for the benefit of locals.
