The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the State’s Director General of Police (DGP) questioning the silence and inaction of the Pipili police in the case involving the brutal gang-rape of a Class IX student of Kamala Sagarpatna village under the Pipili police limits in Puri district.
On May 1, the commission directed DGP Prakash Mishra to file a report on the case within four weeks.Considering the gravity of the incident, the NHRC also directed its DG (Investigations) to collect information on the matter from Odisha officials over phone. The NHRC’s directives were issued in response to a petition filed by human rights activist Manas Jena alleging that the police are trying to hush up the incident as evident from its inaction despite filing of an FIR nearly a month back. Jena, in his petition, has alleged that the police had failed to nab the culprits despite the victim’s father filing an FIR on April 5. He has said the two-month pregnant victim was not provided with safe rehabilitation, as a consequence of which the culprits threatened her and even tried to kill her following which she lost her mental balance.
Jena has alleged that the police did not give much importance to the victim’s father lodging a complaint with the police that attempts are being made to kill his daughter by forcing her to consume pesticide. The victim is currently undergoing treatment at the SCB Medical College Hospital in Cuttack and her condition is stated to be critical.
