Expressing shock and grave concern over the inaction of Government authorities in taking appropriate measures for stoppage of sacrifices of animals and birds under the garb of religious faith during the Chhatar Yatra at Bhawanipatna of Kalahandi district, a woman social activist of Cuttack city has approached the Orissa High Court seeking judicial intervention.
One Jayanti Das of Chandinichowk here has knocked at the doors of court by filing a PIl, in which she has sought strict action against the perpetrators who are engaged in mass butchery of innocent animals and birds in public places like roads, in front of schools, colleges and government establishments and near the hospitals, courts and petrol pumps.
Interestingly, this petitioner has approached the court with the similar plea for the fourth time this time during the past seven years as the authorities are not bothered to comply with the guidelines issued by the High Court in each of the previous writs filed. In the absence of any statutory law banning animal sacrifices, the High Court has only issued guidelines urging the authorities in sensitizing the people against the cruel practice of animal sacrifices under the garb of religious faith.
