An inspection team comprising eight experts of the Medical Council of India (MCI) visited the MKCG Medical College and Hospital here to examine a proposal for increase of seats in various PG courses.

The team visited various departments and examined the available infrastructure and existing resources. Notably, the premier medical college had submitted a proposal to the Center seeking an increase in seats in its 21 PG departments.

The experts went to departments like Anatomy, Bio-Chemistry, Pathology, FMT, Orthopedics, Surgery, and Radio diagnosis. To expedite the inspection, one member of the team visited each department to examine their basic infrastructure and availability of required resources and collect data from the respective heads.

According to information available, the college had requested to increase the PG seats by five in Surgery Department, one in FMT, five in Ophthalmology, four in Anatomy, three in Orthopedics and four in Bio-Chemistry. It had also requested to open new PG course on Radio diagnosis with five seats.

Another expert team of the MCI is likely to visit the college in this connection early next year, sources said. The present team will soon submit its report to the Central Government, said MKCG Principal Prof AK Dandpat.

It may be mentioned here that the MCI had reportedly considered an increase of intake strength of MBBS course of the college to 150 two years ago. With the arrival of the MCI team, the students and the faculty of the college are quite optimistic about the increase of seats in PG Courses and a bright future for the institute.

“Since this premier medical college caters to the healthcare need of the entire south Odisha and border region of Andhra, the college deserves special consideration in the matter of providing infrastructure and in enhancing its intake to meet the emerging needs,” said former Assembly Deputy Speaker and senior BJP leader Rama Chandra Panda.
