Pet lover turns saviour, feeds stray animals

The Covid-19 outbreak followed by lockdown restrictions has made people struggle for basic needs, including food. The lockdown has also put stray animals in distress as they are suffering due to the unavailability of food and water.

Amid this situation, Dr Subhashree Das, a teacher and an animal lover of the city, has come forward to feed strays. “Animals are like us. They need food and shelter like we do. But the difference is that they can’t express their feelings. Large numbers of strays depend on leftovers.

But with people mostly in their houses, eateries and restaurants being closed due to lockdown restrictions, these animals are finding a hard time to get food. Therefore, the idea of helping them came up,” said Dr Das. ‘Help for Humanity’ is an initiative led by Dr Das under which a team of volunteers are feeding biryani, rice, dal, fish, carrots and many other foods to stray animals during the lockdown in various places of the city.

Every day, 25 stray animals are being fed and a fundraiser has been created with Ketto, an online crowdfunding company, so that more stray animals can be provided food during this challenging time. “We are planning to feed around 2000 stray animals; and for that, we need support,” said Dr Das.
