AAP threatens to take issue to streets

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Odisha on Tuesday demanded immediate resumption of the monthly pension to the 606 deprived divorcee Muslim women in the State.

lawyer Asfaq Ali, who is fighting for the cause of women, alleged that the Wakf Board has stopped the allowance to the divorcee women since February 2014 instead of the law Department’s sanction for the same without any communication to the beneficiaries.

Ali said the State which was pleased to add another 546 divorcee women into the beneficiary list and also sanctioned budget in this regard in the year 2011-12 is yet to provide relief to the target women group.

The divorcee women who are listed for the pension are not facing the problem alone, but the group of 786 women who have submitted their respective court judgement copies in the Wakf Board and been waiting for sanction to their pension applications are also apprehensive for their future, he added.

AAP, Odisha convener Nishikanta Mohapatra supporting the cause of the women said, “It’s a matter of great concern that the women who were receiving the monthly pension since 2007 as per court order are now suffering due to the denial of the same without any valid reason.”

Mohapatra said, “If the Government fails to take appropriate action and provide relief to the sufferers, his party will take the issue to the streets.”
