Pay Rs3 lakh to tribal rape survivor: NHRC

Published on:

Acting on the petitions filed by human rights lawyers Subash Mohapatra and Prabir Kumar Das, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reminded the Chief Secretary to make payment of Rs3 lakh to a tribal rape survivor. The victim, a nine-year-old girl and a Class-IV student of Kushumal Sevashram under the Saintala police station in Balangir district, was raped by the peon of the school on October 29, 2013. After getting the report of the SC and ST Additional Secretary-cum-Director (ST), the commission on April 23 last year had observed that State authorities failed to protect the child in their custody and her human rights were violated, for which the State must bear liability.

The commission also ordered the Chief Secretary to give Rs3 lakh compensation to the victim. But the same is yet to be paid to the victim. In its latest order the commission reminded the Chief Secretary to make payment of Rs3 lakh as monetary relief to the victim and directed to submit the proof of the payment within six weeks.
