Passport: Police reports put applicants in a fix

Published on:
Even though the Union Government claims to have simplified procedures for issuance of passports yet adverse police reports have reportedly put many passport applicants in a fix in the State.According to sources, several passport applications have been rejected by the Regional Passport Office here due to adverse police reports. The office has issued show-cause notices to passport holders residing abroad, asking them to clarify why legal actions should not be taken against them.
Interestingly, notices have been issued to even those who had earlier procured their passports by completing all legal formalities. Official sources said the police reports need to be checked as there is a possibility of negligence in gathering background information of the applicants.Notably, applicants need to provide data, including residence proof, to concerned Passport Regional Offices while applying for the passports for which an affidavit is required.
However, in many cases it is seen that the passports are issued on police verification report. At times, applicants had to get approval and recommendation from a gazetted officer of the rank of Additional Secretary. In case of loss/renewal of passports, a new one was being issued on the basis of the old data. Now, police verification has been mandatory in such cases.
According to sources, police officials go directly to applicants house and makes investigation to know whether the applicant has any criminal record. However, many passport applicants and holders allege that police officials demand bribe for issuing a clean report. If they do not get the desired amount, they register adverse reports putting the applicant’s case in jeopardy.
In some case, the applicants approach the police in charge of passport verification to get favourable report. Those who fail in doing so also get adverse reports. This has become an issue for those Republic of India passport holders who are residing abroad.
