The Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee (DPSC) on Home Affairs has appreciated the Odisha Government’s efforts for shifting its focus from mitigation to management of the cyclones of 2013 and 2014 after the devastation caused by 1999 Super Cyclone.
The committee is so impressed that Ministry of Home Affairs has requested Chief Secretary AP Padhi to share the State’s valuable experience in handling disasters.
In its 195th Report, on the “Devastation caused by Natural Disaster, Hudhud Cyclone in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha”, the committee has observed that various organisations like the National Disaster Management Authority and the World Bank have appreciated the efforts of the Odisha Government in handling cyclones.
“A victim in the 1999 Super Cyclone, Odisha successfully shifted its attention from “mitigation” to “management” in the following cyclones Phailin and Hudhud in 2013 and 2014, respectively,” remarked the report.
Commending Odisha’s efforts, the panned hoped that other disaster-prone States would learn from Odisha’s experience in the matter of preparedness and disaster management to meet any eventuality.
