Paresh refuses to undergo brain mapping

The Cuttack Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) here on Friday rejected a request from the Commissionerate police seeking permission to go in for brain mapping and psychoanalysis test of accused Paresh Mohapatra, who was arrested late last month for allegedly killing his live-in partner Alakananda Mishra.

SDJM Abhilash Palei rejected the police request when the counsel for the accused opposed it saying his client is sick and week enough to undergo the rigorous brain mapping and psychoanalysis procedures.

The accused himself also refused to undergo such procedures when he was asked for his consent by the magistrate.

According to sources, the Commissionerate police had also sought the court’s permission to put the accused under lie detection test and brain fingerprinting.

But the court’s views on these two procedures are not known as the judgment on it was kept reserved.

Paresh and three of his associates have been arrested for allegedly killing Alakananda Mishra (35), a teacher, by strangulating her in her own dupatta. Subsequently, with the help of six labourers, the accused persons had disposed of the victim’s body by burning it secretly in a city crematorium. The police have also arrested all the six laboureres.

Although Paresh had admitted to his crime during police interrogation and his statements had been recorded under Section 161 of CrPC, the police are unable to ascertain the motive behind the killing as the accused is not cooperating with the police in this context.
