OSHRC seeks report from Dhenkanal DM

Published on:

The Odisha State Human Rights Commission (OSHRC) has directed the Dhenkanal district Collector to submit a report to the commission on how much ex gratia was paid to the next of kin of the boat mishap on March 7, 2016 in the district in which six people died.

The Collector has been asked to submit the report within four weeks.

The petitioner Human Rights Watch secretary Sangita Swain in her petition to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had alleged that a Government boat carrying around 60 devotees to Shiva temple from Chandipal Ghat capsized in the Brahmari river in Dhenkanal district resulting in the death of one Rubina Rout and five others.

Swain prayed for compensation and for taking action against the concerned public authority for their failure in preventing such a mishap.

However, the NHRC transferred the petition to OSHRC stating that the grievance raised in this petition relates to the matter, which is subject of the State.
