Odisha State Human Rights Commission (OSHRC) Acting Chairman Bira Kishore Mishra superannuated from his service here on Thursday.
Mishra, who was appointed as the Acting OSHRC Chairman in 2013, said, “While the number of cases is increasing by the day, the commission lacks manpower to handle the rising cases. The commission handles nearly 5,000 cases every year, but the staff shortage affects its efficiency.”
“The commission runs mostly on retired personnel; and it would be better if some posts were sanctioned,” said Mishra. He further said, “While earlier, a majority of the cases used to be against police atrocities, of late a number of cases on medical negligence have come to the limelight.”
“During my tenure, the State Government accepted my proposals and suggestions. I thank my well-wishers and officials for the support,” Mishra said.
Notably, the OSHRC, formed in 2003, has been running without a regular Chairman for several years now. With Mishra’s retirement, posts of all three members of the panel now remain vacant.
